First impressions: New owner Laurence Beere 'chucked
out the chintz' last April, creating a sophisticated boutique hotel metres
from the Assembly Rooms and Royal Crescent. Large drawing rooms in warm
aubergine and maroon feature plush sofas and chunky canvas prints. A shaded
terrace at the back is the perfect setting for pre-dinner drinks and spicy
cashew nuts.
What are the rooms like? All 29 are individually designed; ours at ground
level had large sash windows framed by heavy curtains. Rich blue carpets
and chequered fabrics create a Highland feel. Wooden saloon doors lead
through to a gigantic bathroom.
The restaurant: A stylish den in the basement, the Olive
Tree is a popular addition to the local foodie scene. Sleek, with an impressive
wine cellar on show to whet the appetite. Three courses of classy grown-up
fare from around £35.
